Peter Butler III

Honouring our Trail Blazers for #bhm2023

Peter Butler III was born in Lucan, Ontario, in 1859. In 1883, he became a member of the Middlesex County Police, where he served as a tough but fair county constable. In 1913, he joined the Ontario Provincial Police and retired in 1936 after fifty years of policing.

Peter was the first known Black police officer in Canada who made a path for others to follow - a huge impact on Canadian Black History.

The Association of Black Officers has a scholarship program in honour of Peter Butler III to ensure his contribution to Our Story is never forgotten.
